Thanksgiving Timeline

Objectives:

Students will describe the past through the eyes of those who were there.

Students will create a timeline of events.

Students will evaluate decisions from the past.

Students will recount events from biographies.

Materials:

White construction paper for each student

Crayons, markers, or colored pencils

Procedure:

Discuss various aspects of the First Thanksgiving with students, making sure to cover what the Pilgrims did during each season of their first year in America.

Tell the students that the Pilgrims landed on Plymouth Rock in the winter.  After facing a hard winter, the Native Americans showed the Pilgrims how to plant and fish.  During the summer, the crops grew and the Pilgrims flourished.  In the fall, the Pilgrims and the Native Americans celebrated a successful first year in America, feasting together at the First Thanksgiving.

Have children fold their paper into four sections.

Have them illustrate the Pilgrims' lives and how they changed throughout each season (winter, spring, summer, fall).  End the timeline with the First Thanksgiving.

Display the timelines throughout the room and allow each child to explain his or her timeline.
